About TWAIN HARTE
Twain Harte has the best of all worlds in the Sierra Nevada Foothills. It is about 10 miles west, or above, Sonora at an elevation of 3,800 feet. Due to this elevation, Twain Harte has all 4 seasons! It is high enough to enjoy cool summers, and low enough that the winter snow is scenic, not stormy! There is much to do in Twain Harte for all ages, with lots of outdoor activities from golf in the pines to skiing at nearby Dodge Ridge and many scenic lakes to enjoy fishing, boating and swimming. Twain Harte also offers many fine restaurants and shopping in a small town atmosphere!
Twain Harte’s HISTORY
In 1924 the town was established as the Twain Harte Resort by Kehtura Wood. It was names for her husband's two favorite authors: Mark Twain & Bret Harte. The first visitors were some of San Francisco's wealthiest families who sought to enjoy this newly discovered this resort among the pines. Twain Harte’s quaint town atmosphere and natural beauty soon brought visitors from a large geographical area. Today, Twain Harte still attracts more tourists every year, many of whom are now making this special place their home! Still, Twain Harte retains its quaint town streets and beautiful private home sites with cabins to mansions nestled in the pines!
LOCATION
Twain Harte is located in the Sierra-Nevada foothills on highway 108, about 10 miles east of Sonora and the junction with highway 49. Twain Harte has a great Northern California location – just an easy 2 ˝ -hour drive from both the San Francisco Bay Area and the state capital of Sacramento. Yosemite National Park is 70 miles south of Sonora – it is a great vacation spot, but from Twain Harte you can even make a day trip of it!
EDUCATION
Tuolumne County is home to approximately 8,500 children who are served by the local school system. There are 12 public school districts, which include one unified school district, two high school districts, and a community college. The Tuolumne County office of Superintendent provides guidance and leadership for the instructional programs from kindergarten through high school. There are also several private schools in the area.
