About TUOLUMNE
You may recognize Tuolumne as the home of the TV shows Little House on the Prairie and Highway to Heaven, not to mention the movie High Noon in 1952. This quaint town in the Sierra Nevada Foothills was home to a large lumber company in the early 1900’s and became a bustling small city. Since the close of the lumber company in 1962, Tuolumne has become a quaint small town, perfect for country living and home to many ranches and vacation homes. Tuolumne is a bustling little city with colorful shops and cafes and residents! Nearby the new Black Oak Casino is bringing both excitement and family-oriented entertainment to the area.
LOCATION
Tuolumne City is located 8 miles from Sonora on Tuolumne Road. Tuolumne City has a great Northern California location – just an easy 2 ˝ -hour drive from both the San Francisco Bay Area and the state capital of Sacramento. Yosemite National Park is 70 miles south of Sonora – it is a great vacation spot, but from Tuolumne you can even make a day trip of it!
EDUCATION
Tuolumne County is home to approximately 8,500 children who are served by the local school system. There are 12 public school districts, which include one unified school district, two high school districts, and a community college. The Tuolumne County office of Superintendent provides guidance and leadership for the instructional programs from kindergarten through high school. There are also several private schools in the area.
