About SONORA

Sonora’s HISTORY
Sonora was called the Queen of the Southern Mines during the Gold Rush Era. Sonora was settled in 1848 and was known as the wealthiest and wildest town in the southern Mother Lode. In 1851, Sonora was incorporated as a gold mining town and the town still retains much of its historic and small town charm. Sonora has become home to the retail, cultural, commercial and government center of Tuolumne County.
LOCATION
Sonora is located in the Sierra-Nevada foothills on highways 108 and 49. Sonora has a great Northern California location – just an easy 2-hour drive from both the San Francisco Bay Area and the state capital of Sacramento. Yosemite National Park is 70 miles south of Sonora – it is a great vacation spot, but from Sonora you can even make a day trip of it!
EDUCATION
Tuolumne County is home to approximately 8,500 children who are served by the local school system. There are 12 public school districts, which include one unified school district, two high school districts, and a community college. The Tuolumne County office of Superintendent provides guidance and leadership for the instructional programs from kindergarten through high school. There are also several private schools in the area.
